Board of Election Rolls Out New Voting Machines - Discuss Digital Poll Books
March 6, 2019 - Goshen, NY - The Orange County Board of Elections held an open house Wednesday showing off the new voting machines to an audience of county poll workers and several elected leaders. Also on displayed were digital poll books.
Board of Elections Commissioners Louise Vandermark and David Green welcomed representatives from Dominion Voting who gave a preview of the new voting machines. The replacement of voting machines was recently approved by the Orange County Legislature.
Knowink National Sales Director Trisha Bandstra explained the digital poll books. Simply put, digital poll books, or “Poll Pads”, are iPads that could be used at each polling station to replace paper poll books. Currently, Orange County has more than 300 paper poll books.
Albany’s new election laws may force Orange County taxpayers to purchase these digital poll books. Early estimates show a cost of more than $3 million, with state officials offering no funding for this mandate.
The Orange County Legislature’s Rules Committee has oversight at the board of elections. Commissioners Vandermark and Green have appeared before the committee twice in the past three months to provide information and updates on newly enacted election laws. Legislator Faggione is Chairman of the committee.
“The safety and security of each vote cast is of paramount importance,” Legislator Faggione said. “Here in Orange County we will make sure that is the case. Meanwhile in Albany, politicians create new election laws, offer no way to pay for them, and demand the counties and communities figure it all out.”
